Campaign Funding

Re “Sinatra Turns Up as Backer of Bradbury,” March 24.

It is offensive that of the $7,000 raised by Dist. Atty. Michael Bradbury in his reelection campaign, $1,000 has been passed on to his choice for Superior Court judge. That $1,000 check makes Bradbury the largest single contributor to Kevin McGee’s judicial campaign.

McGee’s election effort has been tainted by the $1,000 transfer, and the taint will linger past November. If he is elected judge, will this cozy relationship be disclosed to opposing attorneys every time prosecutors from the district attorney’s office appear in his courtroom? Or can Judge McGee be counted on to forget that his largest campaign contributor has an interest in such cases? Either outcome stretches belief.

I think the people of Ventura County should be the ones to choose the next Superior Court judge. That judge should be indebted to them, not to the district attorney’s office or its incumbent.
