The Los Angeles City Council accepted a $14.6-million federal grant for the Police Department on Wednesday, but the lawmakers also asked the city administrative officer to explore options for dealing with a potential $40-million shortfall in that department’s budget.

The city received $72.3 million from the federal grant program, known as COPS MORE funds, in 1997-98 but will receive $42.5 million in the 1998-99 budget and just $9.1 million the following year.

“It gives us a challenge in next year’s budget,” said Keith Comrie, the city’s administrative officer.
