Northridge Will Know the Score in Fresno

Cal State Northridge’s men and women will compete in their first scoring track and field meet of the outdoor season Saturday when they take on Stanford, Nebraska and Fresno State at Radcliffe Stadium in Fresno.

The meet, part of the U.S. Collegiate track and field series, will be held in a 2 1/2-hour span during the Fresno Relays.

Northridge Coach Don Strametz, like many coaches, said a lack of scoring meets and too many long invitationals have contributed to college track’s declining popularity.

“This is what collegiate track and field should be all about,” Strametz said of Saturday’s meet.

SOFTBALL

Raising Arizona: Nicole Giordano, The Times’ 1997 Valley player of the year, is batting .458 for top-ranked Arizona (36-2).

Giordano, a freshman left fielder from Saugus High, had a 22-game hitting streak before going hitless in a Pac-10 game at Oregon State on Sunday.

She has stolen 14 bases in 14 tries.

Nancy Evans, an All-American from Hoover High, struck out a career-high 17 against Oregon on Saturday.

Evans, a senior, has 160 strikeouts and is on pace to break Arizona’s season record of 256.

Evans (19-0) is 107-6, a school record for career victories.

VOLLEYBALL

By the numbers: George Roumain of Pepperdine leads the nation with 7.65 kills per game, while teammate Chris Jacobson is second in the nation with 2.31 blocks per game.

Ryan Millar, a former Highland High middle blocker, is third in the nation with 2.03 blocks per game.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Cal State Northridge middle blocker Adam Black holds the season high with 15 blocks in a match against Hawaii.

Long Beach State middle blocker Matt Prosser, formerly of Buena High, is tied for the MPSF season high with a .900 hitting percentage against USC.

San Diego State opposite hitter Nick Marbach, formerly of Hoover High, and Scott Wong of Pepperdine each have six aces in a match, also MPSF season highs.
