An 11-year-old boy was accidentally shot to death by his 9-year-old brother Saturday after they found a loaded shotgun while playing in an abandoned building in an unincorporated area adjacent to South-Central Los Angeles, authorities said.

Erik Vidrio, hit once in the torso, died at the scene, a converted garage on West 88th Street in Athens, authorities said.

Homicide investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said several children were playing inside the building about 2 p.m. when they came across the 20-gauge shotgun.

The 9-year-old grabbed the weapon and accidentally fired one round, authorities said.

Investigators late Saturday were attempting to track down the owner of the weapon and determine how the children found it.
