Agency, Cabin Dwellers Meet

Share

About 30 concerned Cleveland National Forest cabin owners met with a National Forest Service study team Saturday for several hours to discuss the service’s plan to require that their homes comply with environmental guidelines.

The team is evaluating what effect the rustic cabins have on the water quality in the forest. One attendee, David Rukstalis, said he “felt good” about the meeting, in part because a member of their group will be allowed to attend future meetings of the government study team.

The Forest Service representatives promised to notify cabin owners if environmental studies determine that any of the approximately 330 cabins are polluting creeks and other water sources and give the owners a chance to fix them up.

Some of the owners are concerned that the government might try to acquire and demolish their rustic dwellings in coming years.
