A Dreier Forecast

Writers Nina J. Easton and Gebe Martinez have discovered what we in the San Gabriel Valley have known for the past 17 years (“In the Ashes of the Revolution,” Feb. 8). Congressman David Dreier is a bright, articulate, energetic leader who has attempted to make government more accountable and cost-effective.

In fact, he would make a perfect House speaker, because he is one of the few public officials who would rise above partisan politics to solve our local and national problems.

I would not describe balancing the budget for the first time in 30 years, enacting the largest tax cut in 16 years and reforming welfare as elements of a fizzled revolution. As the most capable of the three congressmen profiled, Dreier is the best positioned to lead the next phase of the Republican reform agenda, with its focus on creating a limited but effective government capable of expanding prosperity and protecting personal freedom.

It’s one thing to fight for what you truly believe in, another to fight simply for the sake of fighting. Regarding the irrational, arbitrary rebelliousness in Congressman Dana Rohrabacher’s dealings with matters of importance, it’s interesting that a Republican observer describes this flailing loon as “the guy conservatives go to see to make sure they haven’t lost their souls.”

Kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
