UCLA Gymnasts Stay on Course for Title

Share

UCLA, faced with the somewhat embarrassing prospect of hosting the NCAA women’s gymnastics championships and not being allowed to defend its national title, rallied in the West Regional and now everything is set.

The Bruins will compete when the championships begin at Pauley Pavilion on April 16, thanks to some superior work in the vault in the regionals.

Make that superior and courageous. Stella Umen scored 9.9 on the vault after falling on her head and injuring her neck on the first event, the uneven parallel bars.

She led a team aggregate of 49.4 in the event, enough to make the championships.

“It is anybody’s championship to win,” said Bruin Coach Valorie Kondos. “But, as I said last year, if Georgia chooses to open the door, I feel we’ll be right there to take the championships.”

Georgia is seeded No. 1 in the 12-school championships. From the West, Washington is seeded fourth. UCLA is 10th at 195.100.
