Truck Hits School Bus; 8 Children Hurt
A flatbed truck hauling cars rear-ended a school bus in Chappell Hill, tearing a hole in the rear of the bus and injuring 22, two seriously. The bus had pulled over on a road near U.S. Highway 290 and was letting children off when the truck slammed into it, Brenham School Supt. Virginia Collier said. Twenty-five students, ages 6 to 18, were on the bus, Collier said. One girl, 15, was unconscious and in critical condition with a head injury. Both were taken by helicopter to a Houston hospital. A second girl, 16, was in stable condition with a laceration to the back of her head and abdominal pain. At least six students were treated for minor injuries at another hospital. The male truck driver, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Authorities would not speculate about any possible charges until conducting an investigation.
