A 40-member committee that will guide the development of Santa Monica Boulevard will have its first meeting Tuesday, officials said.

The Santa Monica Boulevard Advisory Steering Committee will meet twice a month to advise design firm Zimmer Gunsul Frasca on refurbishment of the thoroughfare, said Ray Reynolds, the city’s director of community development.

The City Council on Monday approved the formation of the committee, which will be chaired by Mayor Steve Martin. The group is composed of residents, business owners, city commissioners and representatives from various organizations.

“Santa Monica Boulevard is, in a sense, West Hollywood’s Main Street,” Reynolds said. Changes to the street may include reducing the width of the median and widening sidewalks, adding public art, and improving landscaping and lighting, he said.

The city is negotiating to take over maintenance of the state-owned boulevard between Doheny Drive and La Brea Avenue. Construction is to begin next year.

The public meeting of the steering committee will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.
