Re “Mary Bono Handily Wins House Seat of Late Husband,” April 8: I cannot fathom how anyone can think that persons with no previous background can serve well in Congress. It is as though the office was bought on name recognition alone, and I feel that the public deserves more than that. Mary Bono will now join the countless others who will become a pawn of the more experienced members of Congress.

Frankly, I can never understand why elections like this are allowed to happen. Whenever I have applied for a position, my experience counted for something. Keep the homebodies out of politics, and set higher standards of education and experience so that the public can get the best for its money.

Re “She’s No Longer Just Mrs. Bono,” March 30: I attended the Beaumont Rotary meeting for Bono. She may be a newcomer to politics, but she won the support of nearly everyone in attendance.

When I asked her about the future of March Air Force Base, she responded with well-thought-out facts. However, she really took hold when she did something few, if any, politicians will do. Asked about the Salton Sea, she dared to say, “I don’t know all of the answers on the question. However, I will tell what I do know.” That takes guts, and with that simple but honest comment she won many a vote.
