Escapee, Friend Arrested After Wreck Kills 1

A convict, whose escape was allegedly plotted by his mother, was arrested along with a friend Sunday when their car slammed into another vehicle, killing the driver of the second car, police said.

Armed robber Jay Sigler, 31, escaped Saturday from the Everglades Correctional Institution when an accomplice rammed a big-rig truck through security fences.

Sigler and Christopher Michelson, 33, who was recently released from the prison, took off in a car. They were seen Sunday on Pompano Beach.

The pair noticed they were being tailed, said special agent Lew Wilson of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and in fleeing, they ran a stop sign and plowed into a car, killing the 55-year-old driver. Michelson was charged Sunday with first-degree murder in the death of the motorist, whose identity was not disclosed.

The escape plan was hatched last Christmas, Wilson said. Sandra Sigler, the convict’s 58-year-old mother, is believed to have taken care of the details, police said. The mother was also arrested in connection with the breakout.
