Work Begins on Education Facility for At-Risk Youth
About 40 people showed up for a “wall-breaking” ceremony at a bank building that will be transformed into an educational center for at-risk youth and their families.
The Founders-Hope Centre will be ready this fall for students who are on probation, have been expelled from school, have dropped out of school, have been involved in gangs or are pregnant.
The center, operated by the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Juvenile Court and Community Schools Division, will have high school classes, literacy classes, mental health services, computer training, parenting classes and a school-to-career program. The facility, at 477 E. Compton Blvd., is expected to be used by 1,200 students and their families in the Compton, Lynwood and Paramount areas.
Local businesses, nonprofit and religious organizations and law enforcement officials will provide training and assistance.
Working with the county are Founders National Bank of Los Angeles, the Compton Unified School District and the county Probation Department.
