Northridge Streak Ends in 14 Innings

It took 14 innings, but the Kansas State baseball team ended Cal State Northridge’s record 16-game winning streak Friday at Manhattan, Kan.

Northridge blew a one-run lead in the ninth, a three-run lead in the 12th and a one-run lead in the 14th, finally falling, 14-13, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Northridge won the seven-inning second game, 10-7, behind four hits and three runs scored by Nakia Hill.

In the opener, the Matadors (29-18) pounded out 20 hits, but made five errors. Chris MacMillan had five hits, including his 12th home run and Darren Dyt tripled, doubled and singled.

Marco Estrada and Eric Horvat each doubled twice and singled. Hill had two singles to give him six hits in the two games.

Kansas State (15-21) scored in the ninth to tie the score, 9-9, and force extra innings.

Northridge scored three in the 12th on a two-run triple by Dyt and a wild pitch, but Kansas State scored three in the bottom of the inning.

Northridge scored in the 14th on a bases-loaded walk by Kevin Patrick. However it was Patrick’s error that allowed Kansas State to keep its winning rally alive moments later.

Left-hander Jose Vasquez (7-5), the fifth Northridge pitcher, allowed three runs in 2 1/3 innings, but none were earned.

Kansas State had 22 hits and left 22 runners on base.

In the second game, Northridge scored three runs in the seventh to snap a tie.

Kansas State loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but relief pitcher Jim DeBiase struck out Mark English to end the game.

Seldom-used Kevin Fujimoto (1-1) got the win for the Matadors.

In another baseball game:

Cal Lutheran 10, La Verne 2--Adam Springston pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts as the Kingsmen (19-6, 15-1) earned their 12 consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Cal Lutheran.

Springston (5-1), formerly of Simi Valley High and Oxnard College, allowed two earned runs and one walk.

Joseph Jauregui had two hits, including his fourth home run, and finished with three RBIs and Donny Churchman had two hits and three RBIs for Cal Lutheran.

Justin Ott doubled twice for La Verne (5-25, 4-12).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

CS Northridge 6, UC Irvine 3--Nely Horowic, Isabella Peintner, Birgit Frankenberg and Kendra Segura each won their singles matches to help the Matadors (16-5) win at UC Irvine.

MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

Citrus 64, Valley 47--Francisco Diaz won the three-meter and one-meter diving events but the Monarchs (5-4, 4-4) lost a Western State Conference meet at Citrus College.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

Valley 67, Citrus 47--April Littlejohn won the three-meter and one-meter diving events to help the Monarchs (6-3, 5-3) win a WSC meet at Citrus College.
