A man apparently distraught over a breakup with his girlfriend was critically burned when he doused himself with lantern fuel and set himself aflame in her frontyard, authorities said.

Philip Vance was listed Sunday in critical condition at San Bernardino County Medical Center, nursing supervisor Helen Ramirez said.

He suffered burns over 90% of his body at 4 p.m. Saturday, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Jerry Bulf said.

Deputies went to the home of Vance’s girlfriend after someone called to report a domestic dispute there. Vance was gone by the time deputies arrived but apparently returned after they left, Bulf said.

Vance set himself ablaze on his girlfriend’s frontyard. A passing driver saw him, stopped and pushed him to the ground to help douse the flames, Bulf said.
