1995 Peppoli Chianti Classico, Tuscany (About $18)

Share

This is a big bruiser of a Chianti from an extraordinary year, intensely rich and fruity with a lingering taste of luscious dark cherries and enough tannin to give it the structure of a Savile Row suit. It’s almost all Sangiovese, blended with just 10% Canaiolo and other grapes to make a lush and elegant Chianti Classico in the modern style.

It’s a perfect wine for the barbecue season--to accompany, say, mixed grills, pork chops with sage or pollo al mattone. It’s made by Antinori, whose wines are usually good buys at every price level, and this one is no exception. (It’s also a good bet on wine lists.) Put some bottles away for future drinking too.
