Oxnard Area Economy

Share

Re “Group to Discuss Redevelopment,” April 16.

Why is it that no matter what is done to improve downtown Oxnard, nothing helps the economy of the area?

I frequent there once a month, and the only reason I do is to pay my four utility bills and to look for any economic improvement. I accomplish the former quite well but am sorry to see negative results on the latter.

The vitalization efforts are worthy but misplaced. I suggest going in the opposite direction and converting it into another Olvera Street. Such an ethnic marketplace and entertainment atmosphere should attract tourists downtown.

After all that has been done, the locals are not supporting the economic base; witness all the vacant stores.

Perhaps another answer lies in a name change. Let’s face it: Whenever I tell someone where I live, the name Oxnard has always evoked a negative response. If city officials are serious about a better image for the entire city, perhaps a new name would be a starting point.
