The Dallas Stars will be without leading scorer Joe Nieuwendyk for at least two weeks.

Nieuwendyk, who opened the scoring 2:22 into Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over San Jose in a playoff opener, injured his right knee late in the first period when he was driven into the boards by Shark defenseman Bryan Marchment.

While playing for the Edmonton Oilers, Marchment put the Stars’ Mike Modano out of the lineup for 12 games with an intentional knee-on-knee hit in December that drew a three-game suspension and $1,000 fine.

Despite being carried off the ice on a stretcher with what appeared to be a serious neck injury Wednesday night, Philadelphia Flyer defenseman Petr Svoboda said he will be ready to play next week.

Svoboda, 32, accidentally was kneed in the head by Buffalo Sabre forward Dixon Ward in the second period of the Sabres’ 3-2 victory in the teams’ playoff opener.

Phoenix defenseman Teppo Numminen, who has played in a franchise-record 218 consecutive regular-season games, will be sidelined for a week because of a groin strain suffered in the Coyotes’ playoff-opening loss to Detroit. . . . Washington forward Peter Bondra, who tied for the league lead with 52 goals, pronounced himself fit despite a sprained right ankle suffered during the second period of the Capitals’ 3-1 victory over Boston in a playoff opener. . . . Colorado winger Rene Corbet underwent surgery to repair a broken left thumb. Corbet suffered the injury midway through the third period of Wednesday’s playoff opener when he was slashed by Edmonton forward Doug Weight.
