2 Pacific Coast Highway Lanes to Be Closed Daily for 6 Hours

Two northbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway will be closed for six hours daily while a crumbling bluff near the California Incline is stabilized, officials said Friday.

The Palisades Park bluff in the 600 block of Ocean Avenue is saturated with water and has been weakened by a series of landslides the past two weeks, said Mark Cuneo of the city engineer’s office. Water oozed out of the face of the bluff at a rate of 1,000 gallons an hour Friday, he said.

“We really need to get the water stopped or at least into something we can control,” Cuneo said. “Right now we’re concerned some of the material on the bluffs has the potential of falling.”

Burns Pacific Construction of Thousand Oaks began work Wednesday on a 200-foot-long berm at the base of the cliff to contain residue from the stabilization work, Cuneo said.

Cuneo said contractors will chisel off 5 to 10 feet of the bluff and drill horizontal drainage holes into its face over the next two weeks.

The highway lanes will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. between California Incline and Chautauqua Boulevard for the duration of the project. One of those lanes is closed at all hours to accommodate the berm.
