Fordyce Johnson; Doctor Was Leader in Ear, Nose and Throat Field

Dr. Fordyce Johnson, 93, former president of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. Born in Fargo, N.D., and educated at the University of Oregon, Johnson served as an Army doctor during World War II, helping to convert the Vista del Arroyo Hotel in Pasadena into a hospital. He established his ear, nose and throat practice in Pasadena and was on the staff at Huntington Memorial Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital. When Methodist Hospital in Arcadia opened, he was elected chief of staff there. After he retired in 1980, Johnson was elected president of the 1,000-member national academy of allergy specialists. He had previously edited the organization’s publication, Transactions. Johnson taught at USC and, during his retirement years, at UC San Diego. He was also the author of two books on the diagnosis and treatment of allergies and 30 papers about otolaryngology. On March 27 in La Jolla.
