FIRST QUARTER: TRAIL BLAZERS, 30 / LAKERS, 25

Share

* Highlight Reel: Arvydas Sabonis’ legs are supposed to be shot, but the Lithuanian and his teammates looked like a touring ballet company when with about 35 seconds left, Stoudamire flew out of bounds along the left sideline to save a pass, threw the ball high in the air toward midcourt, where Sabonis nimbly toed the sideline before catching and throwing the ball to Walt Williams. Williams dribbled, passed to Rasheed Wallace, who finished the play with a slam dunk.

* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Eddie Jones receives his largest ovation of the night when he draws a nonshooting foul--twenty-five feet from the basket against his nemesis Isaiah Rider.

* Winning Number: Nick Van Exel comes off the bench and makes three of four shots, including two three-pointers.

* Wrong Number: Zero. The number of rebounds of Shaquille O’Neal ended the quarter with.

SECOND QUARTER: TRAIL BLAZERS, 53 / LAKERS, 47

* Highlight Reel: Robert Horry leaves no doubt he is recovered from his Achilles’ injury when he chases down Stoudamire from behind, blocks his shot and bounds over the table along press row.

* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Elden Campbell’s windmill jam off a miss by Van Exel starts the Laker reserve on his way to a 14-point night.

* Winning Number: Campbell makes both his field goal attempts, both his free-throw attempts, and grabs three rebounds.

* Wrong Number: Six. Number of points Lakers trailed by when half ended.

THIRD QUARTER: TRAIL BLAZERS, 74 / LAKERS, 74

* Highlight Reel: O’Neal almost brings down the rim--and the house--by taking a pass in full stride from Campbell near the top of the lane and throwing down a monster jam to give the Lakers a 68-67 lead. The crowd goes over the edge wen O’Neal makes the free throw.

* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Kobe grows up. With 8:29 remaining, Bryant has the ball on a 3-on-1 break against Sabonis. Instead of going for the spectacular, he dishes to his right to O’Neal, who forces Sabonis to commit his fifth personal foul.

* Winning Number: O’Neal makes five of seven shots, two free throws and grabs five rebounds with Sabonis out of the picture.

* Wrong Number: Rider goes three of even with a turnover as the Lakers pull even.

FOURTH QUARTER: TRAIL BLAZERS, 102 / LAKERS, 104

* Highlight Reel: With the score 97-95 and 31 seconds left, Van Exel takes the ball to the left wing, sends Stoudamire sprawling with a spin to his left, then steps back and drains a game-clinching three-pointer.

* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Bryant, shaking off last year’s embarrassing final playoff game, takes charge and scores 11 points in the fourth quarter.

* Winning Number: 11. The number of points Bryant scored.

* Wrong Number: Sixth. The foul Walt Williams picked up with 2:38 left, depriving his team of a sharpshooter down the stretch.
