Two hikers were rescued Monday after spending the night lost in a steep canyon in Cleveland National Forest, sheriff’s authorities said.

Yvette Hill, 36, of Irvine and Maureen Dobson, 33, of Corona were near Saddleback Mountain late Sunday when they missed a trail that would have led them out of the isolated area, officials said.

Exhausted and wearing only shorts and T-shirts, the women decided to spend the night in the canyon and use a cellular phone to call rescuers the next morning.

A spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said the pair were spotted by a helicopter pilot dispatched from El Toro Marine Corps Air Station Monday morning.

Because of the terrain, the spokesman said, the helicopter pilot looking for them “didn’t even see them” at first. “They’re very lucky they had the cell phone,” he said.
