Gonzalez Elected Mayor, De La Torre to Be Vice Mayor
The City Council has unanimously elected Henry C. Gonzalez as mayor to fill the vacancy left last month by the death of Ann Buckles. Councilman Hector de la Torre was voted in as the new Vice Mayor.
Council members took the action at Tuesday’s meeting. A day later, at a special meeting, members deadlocked on whether to hold an election or appoint someone to fill the vacancy on the council. The council will have only four members until the next city election in March 1999.
