Phillies Put Green on DL

The Philadelphia Phillies put right-handed pitcher Tyler Green on the 15-day disabled list because of his injured pitching elbow. Green may have to undergo season-ending surgery.

To take Green’s roster spot, the Phillies activated right-hander Ken Ryan from the disabled list.

Kansas City Royal outfielder Jeff Conine was put on the 15-day disabled list and third baseman Scott Leius was called up from triple-A Omaha.

The Cleveland Indians recalled right-handed pitcher Steve Karsay from Buffalo of the American Assn. and optioned right-hander Chad Ogea to Buffalo.

Ogea is 4-2 with a 5.59 earned-run average in 12 appearances, including seven starts, for the Indians.

The Detroit Tigers agreed to terms with pitcher Jeff Weaver, the team’s top pick in the 1998 draft.

Weaver, 21, from Fresno State, was the 14th overall pick. He will be assigned to the Tigers’ Class-A affiliate in Jamestown (N.Y.) of the New York-Penn League. Terms of the contract weren’t disclosed.

Larry Herndon was fired as batting coach for the Detroit Tigers and replaced by minor league roving instructor Toby Harrah.
