An Oxnard gang leader was sentenced to 19 years in prison Monday for the January 1997 slaying of a 24-year-old man outside a Saviers Road restaurant.

George Doctolero, 20, admitted last month--as the jury in his murder trial was being picked--that he shot Jose Basilan in front of John’s Rendezvous Restaurant.

Doctolero could have received up to 25 years for his role in the slaying, which was ordered by a fellow gang member.

But Judge Donald Coleman sentenced Doctolero to less than the maximum term, despite an emotional plea by the mother of his victim.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Ron Bamieh had also recommended Doctolero receive the harshest possible sentence.

“It’s as much intent as you can possibly have,” Bamieh said. “He fled to the Philippines after he shot the victim. And after he shot the victim the first time, he ran up to him a second time and tried to shoot him again, but the gun jammed.”

Mario Desquera, 26, of Oxnard received 16 years in prison last month for ordering Doctolero to shoot Basilan during an argument outside the restaurant.
