Wedding Party Holdup Nets Cash and Jewels

Share

Newlyweds celebrating at home with family members early Sunday were robbed by a group of men who took nearly $40,000 in cash and jewelry--including gifts the couple received, police said.

The robbers, described by police as three or four Asian men in their 20s, took about $10,000 in cash gifts and made off with an estimated $30,000 in jewelry from the couple and family members, police said.

The robbery occurred about 12:45 a.m. Sunday in the 11700 block of Banner Avenue, Garden Grove Police Lt. John Woods said. The men, carrying handguns, ordered the couple and nine or 10 family members into a back bedroom and then ransacked the house.

Woods said the robbers, who drove a white van, most likely knew the victims or knew they would be returning from the wedding with cash gifts, as is customary in Vietnamese weddings.

The names of the victims were not released.
