Theodore Apstein; Screenwriter, Playwright

Theodore Apstein, 80, screenwriter, playwright and professor whose work included the films “Baffled” and “The Link.” Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Apstein went to high school in Berlin, earned a bachelor’s degree at the National University of Mexico, a master’s at UC Berkeley and a doctorate at the University of Texas. He also studied theater in South America through a Rockefeller Foundation grant. The writer taught playwriting at Columbia University and play analysis at the American Theatre Wing before joining the UCLA faculty in 1965. While teaching playwriting in Westwood for 27 years, Apstein continued to write scores of scripts for stage, television and film. His play “The Innkeepers” was produced on Broadway, starring Geraldine Page and Darren McGavin, and his “Come Share My House” appeared off-Broadway. He wrote more than 100 television shows, including material for “Hallmark Hall of Fame,” “Studio One,” “Alcoa Playhouse” and “U.S. Steel Theatre Guild Hour” and such series as “Dr. Kildare,” “Marcus Welby M.D.” and “The Waltons.” Apstein served on the board of the Writers Guild of America. On July 26 in Los Angeles of complications from a stroke.

Ken Davis; Lighting Company Founder

Ken Davis, 76, versatile Yellowstone fish and game warden who founded his own lighting company. Born in Butte, Mont., Davis grew up helping to run the family saloon there. After serving in the Marines on Okinawa during World War II, he returned to Butte and briefly worked as a blacksmith in copper mines. Davis, an outdoorsman at heart, next became a horseback fish and game warden in Yellowstone National Park, trapping and tagging wildlife. He moved his family to Los Angeles in 1960 and became an ironworker, erecting steel frameworks for several high-rise buildings in Los Angeles and San Diego. In the late 1960s, Davis started his own company, Davis Fluorescents, in his garage. The company is now based at 8524 Venice Blvd. On July 27 in Irvine.

Stanley Lagerlof; Water Rights Attorney

Stanley C. Lagerlof, 83, water rights attorney and executive in tennis organizations. A native of Minnesota, Lagerlof earned degrees from the University of Minnesota and USC School of Law. He served as a Navy officer during World War II and then became founding partner of the law firm now known as Lagerlof, Senecal, Bradley, Gosney & Kruse. He was a specialist in water rights and water district law, and represented the Castaic Lake Water Agency, the Keene Water District and the Pico County Water District, among others. Lagerlof was also counsel for the Public Water Agencies Group and was a director of the Assn. of California Water Agencies. An avid tennis player, the attorney served as president of the Los Angeles Tennis Club and of the Foothill Tennis Patrons Assn., which he helped found to promote youth tennis. Lagerlof was a ranked player in senior tennis for many years. On Saturday in Oceanside.
