State Probes Alleged ‘Cramming’ by Coral

California regulators opened an investigation into “cramming” charges against Coral Communications Inc. of Boca Raton, Fla. The Public Utilities Commission suspects that Coral may have billed more than 300,000 Californians for calling cards they never ordered and never received--a practice known as cramming. Regulators said Coral was operating in the state without a license and is the subject of civil charges of deceptive business practices by other state attorneys general. The company used contest displays and sweepstakes entry boxes in malls and retail stores to draw in “customers,” the PUC said.
