Church to Remember Hiroshima

Ventura’s College United Methodist Church will hold a special “Peace With Justice” service Sunday to remember Hiroshima, according to member Kathy Campbell. Hiroshima survivor Nikigo Kiser will be the guest preacher at the new 10 a.m. worship service time. Fellowship will follow at 11.

At the Aug. 16 service, longtime church treasurer Bud Bryson will be honored.

On Aug. 23, Native American Sunday and Blessing of the Animals will be held on the lawn. The community is invited to bring pets; a Chumash storyteller and a Cherokee flutist will perform.

The Russian Orthodox Choir from St. Petersburg, Russia, will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 28. The five-person professional ensemble will sing a cappella religious music.

Chabad Plans 2-Day Phone-Athon

Chabad of the Conejo will hold its 12th annual phone-athon fund-raiser Sunday and Aug. 16. “Say Chai (Life) to Chabad” volunteers will begin calling the community for donations at 9:30 a.m. on those dates. Funds raised will be used for Chabad’s outreach and educational programs.

Temple Changes Service Time

Jewish Families of Camarillo--Temple Ner Ami announces that its Shabbat services now start at 7 p.m. Fridays. It also said it will no longer hold services led by laymen.

Council Sets Pancake Breakfast

Oxnard’s St. Anthony Church Women’s Council will serve a pancake breakfast Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to noon in the Condon Center. The cost is $3.50 for adults and $2 for children. All parishioners and friends are invited.

Sunday Mass times are 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m. in English, noon and 1:30 p.m. in Spanish. Saturday Mass is at 5:15 p.m.

Unity Center Announces Schedule

“The Lame Shall Walk” will be the sermon title Sunday at the Unity Center Church in Thousand Oaks. Cheryl Squiers will be the day’s soloist, and the Rev. Irma Oestmann will teach five steps to achieving personal peace.

At 7 p.m. Aug. 14, a workshop titled “Nutrition and the Mind” will be presented by the church at the Westlake Community Room, 4373 Park Terrace Drive. Nutritionist William Stanley will focus on the latest research on brain chemistry, showing how diet, exercise and meditation can regenerate the mind.

Unity is an interfaith, nondenominational church and invites all faiths to worship at its 10 a.m. service. The church meets at the Holiday Inn, 495 N. Ventu Road in Thousand Oaks. For information, call 496-6901.

Services Are Contemporary, Casual

Channel Islands Vineyard Christian Fellowship invites the public to its Sunday morning services at 9 and 11 a.m, featuring contemporary music and casual dress, said pastor Bill Coulter.

Special Sunday college worship services will begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18 and 25.

Family Barbecues Planned Weekly

St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church of Thousand Oaks will hold a summer outreach dinner and fund-raiser called “Friday Family Gourmet Barbecue” on several Friday evenings on the church grounds. Everyone is welcome.

The barbecue will offer a variety of entrees and side dishes, available to take out or eat on the premises. The barbecue will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. through Sept. 11.

The barbecue team works with the charitable group People to People, which has served thousands of meals to local needy and homeless people.

Israeli Consulate Official to Speak

Congregation B’Nai Emet Reform Temple’s Friday service will feature guest speaker Dona Phares, media relations director for the Israeli Consulate. The service begins at 8 p.m. at 4645 Industrial St., Room 2C., in Simi Valley.

Temple Offers Kids’ Services

Temple Beth Torah in Ventura invites families with preschool children to participate in a tot Shabbat service at 7 p.m. Friday. This short service for very young children will include songs, a story and refreshments.

The regular Friday night service will follow at 8 p.m., led by Rabbi Lisa Hochberg-Miller and new Cantor Michael Anatole.
