Did Fieger Vote in Wrong Place?
Oakland County officials said Thursday that Democratic gubernatorial nominee Geoffrey Fieger voted in a West Bloomfield Township precinct where he no longer lives.
In his first try at public office, Fieger, best known as the lawyer for suicide doctor Jack Kevorkian, won Tuesday’s primary with 41% of the vote in a three-way race. He faces two-term incumbent Gov. John Engler at the polls in November.
“If anyone wants to claim I voted in the wrong place, they can go to hell,” Fieger said. “What difference does it make? I suppose you’re not supposed to tear off the tags on pillows and mattresses, too.”
According to state elections director Chris Thomas, after someone moves, there is a 60-day grace period to return to the old precinct to vote. Fieger had said earlier that he moved in June, which means he was within the 60-day grace period unless he moved the first week of June.
An attempt to clarify the question was not immediately successful.
At any rate, West Bloomfield Township officials said they don’t plan to press charges.
