Police Officer Convicted of Battery on Woman Resigns

An El Monte police officer convicted of battery of a woman has resigned, authorities said.

Richard Lyons, 35, could have been forced to leave the department under a federal law that bans officers convicted of acts of domestic violence from carrying a handgun for 10 years, police said.

Before his conviction, Lyons was restricted to administrative duties in connection with the 1997 incident, Lt. John Burkhart said. He had been on administrative leave since his conviction in April, for which he was sentenced to probation.

Lyons’ attorney did not return telephone calls Monday seeking comment.
