State Budget to Boost School Stadium, Pool

More than a quarter of a million dollars for Ventura County educational programs is included in the state budget approved Monday by the state Senate, according to Sen. Jack O’Connell (D-San Luis Obispo).

The budget was expected to be approved by the Assembly late Monday before being presented to Gov. Pete Wilson for consideration.

In the plan, Ventura Unified School District would receive $200,000 toward renovation of the Buena High School stadium.

The money would help the district with its $2.4-million plan to build a multipurpose community stadium at the high school.

The plan also includes $80,000 earmarked for swimming pool renovation at Santa Paula Union High School. For that $353,000 project, the district has obtained $275,000 in pledges and donations.

“Senators have always had a soft spot for projects which benefit youth,” O’Connell said in a written statement. “They see that the community is trying to work together to bring a valuable service . . . and that they will bend over backward to accommodate those needs.”
