Lakers, Kings Plan to Build El Segundo Practice Facility

Share

One day, the Lakers practice in the Great Western Forum, the next at Los Angeles Southwest College. One day, the Kings practice in the Forum, the next at Iceoplex in North Hills.

All that will end at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season for both teams, which will announce today their intent to build a combined practice facility on Nash Street in El Segundo.

The $15-million, 120,000-square-foot complex will have both an ice rink and a basketball floor, the rink to be open for public skating when the Kings are not using it. The King hockey operations will move to the new facility, along with the Laker front office.

Naming rights for the building will be sold.

The construction is part of a plan under which both teams will move from the Forum next season to the new Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, there to be joined by the Clippers.
