Officials Hail City’s Juvenile Justice Center as a National Model
Law enforcement officials are scheduled to open a center to fight juvenile crime that will include police and probation officers, drug counselors and perhaps eventually an on-site courtroom.
“The goal is to counter the rise of crime by children 6 to 13 years old,” said Police Lt. Kevin Raney.
He said that through early intervention, officials hope to prevent troubled children from committing more serious crimes when they are older.
The Juvenile Justice Center, 11301 Acacia Parkway, is scheduled to open this month. It is being hailed by police as a national model because it brings together many juvenile-crime prevention efforts under one roof.
The center will house the Police Department’s Youth Services Unit, the Girls and Boys Club of Garden Grove’s youth diversion program, and officials from the Orange County Probation Department. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officers and youth counselors will also have offices there.
Officials hope that a deputy district attorney specializing in juvenile crime as well as a juvenile court judge will be assigned to the 5,000-square-foot building.
