Council Ends Block Party Permit Fees
Neighborhoods may find it easier to party after the City Council on Tuesday abolished fees ranging from $250 to $350 for throwing block parties.
Councilman Harold R. Kaufman said he had received a complaint from a resident about the fees, prompting the proposal.
The council approved abolishing the fees on a 3-2 vote. Councilwomen Karen Lloreda and Ruby L. Netzley said they would support a reduction, but not an elimination, of the fee.
“The fees were a deterrent and we could see a lot more parties that the police will have to block off and monitor,” Lloreda said. “The city will now pay for those services out of the general fund.”
According to City Manager John B. Bahorski, the city issued just two block party permits last year.
Neighborhoods still will need permits for block parties, with requirements remaining the same, including paying a $150 refundable street-cleaning deposit.
