Council OKs Its Part of Deal to Reopen Pool

Plans to reopen the swimming pool at the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center cleared another hurdle earlier this week.

City Council members approved their end of a deal with the county that would provide $200,000 over three years toward operations of the revamped pool, which is being repaired for community use.

Annual cost estimates run $100,000, but the 50-meter pool is expected to recoup about 50% of that through fees, Mayor Ronald Bates said.

The funding proposal still needs to clear the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

About $30,000 is required for basic repair work to reopen the pool, possibly by fall. The city has $205,000 in private donations to pay for long-term improvements.

Reopening the pool has been a priority for the City Council in 1998. Council members have been working closely with the military, neighboring cities and other parties to accomplish the project.
