Bill Ryan; Longtime Editor at Los Angeles Herald Examiner

Bill Ryan, veteran Los Angeles newsman who retired as assistant managing editor of the now-defunct Los Angeles Herald Examiner, has died. He was 83.

Ryan died Wednesday in a Claremont hospital of the complications of Parkinson’s disease, his wife, Marjorie, said Thursday.

Born in Colorado Springs, Colo., Ryan moved to California as a child and grew up in Long Beach. He graduated from Long Beach City College.

Ryan began as a copy boy and worked more than 45 years at the Los Angeles Herald-Express and its successor, the Herald Examiner, which went out of business in 1989. He spent most of his career as news editor of the evening daily, retiring in 1980.

During his retirement years, Ryan became one of the first active male members of the Claremont League of Women Voters. He was also a dedicated volunteer at the Claremont Colleges’ International Place, which assists foreign students with housing and other needs.

Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Kerry Ryan and Candice Bonazzola, and two nieces.

Memorial services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Aug. 27 at Claremont Presbyterian Church.
