Cardinals Do Best McGwire Imitation

From Associated Press

The Cardinals hit five home runs, and Mark McGwire didn’t have any of them.

“I would have taken the odds on that one,” said Tom Lampkin, who hit a three-run shot in a 10-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. “I would have bet on that one.

“But that’s why you’ve got nine guys and the guys on the bench. We picked him up today; he’s been picking us up all year.”

Ray Lankford, who leads the team with 11 home runs since the All-Star break, hit his 22nd, a three-run shot.

Delino DeShields, Brian Jordan and Fernando Tatis hit solo homers as the Cardinals had their second five-home run game this season.

McGwire, who still has 47 homers, barely got to swing his bat.

He walked three times, was nicked by a pitch and scored twice before getting a rest after the sixth inning. McGwire also didn’t take batting practice before the game, but mumbled “I’m fine” en route to the shower. Manager Tony La Russa said he took his slugger out to give Pat Kelly a look in left field. John Mabry moved from left field to first base.
