Trails Being Cleared of Dense Overgrowth

National Park Service workers and volunteers have hit the trail, hacking and clearing more than 500 miles of paths that wind through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area.

“Last winter’s El Nino rains created a phenomenal vegetation growth and eroded some trails to the point of closure,” said Art Eck of the recreational area.

Consequently, in a coordinated effort, the National Park Service, California Conservation Corps, Camp 13 and volunteer groups are slashing through some of the most dense vegetation seen in years.

Eck said the most damaged trails will be cleared first.

Workers hope to clear away all the brush and vegetation from trails by the end of November.
