Group of Business, Political Leaders to Study LAX Expansion

Share

A working group of elected officials and business leaders has been formed to analyze the proposed expansion of Los Angeles International Airport, officials said.

The group was created as a result of recommendations made last week during a meeting with Rep. Jane Harman (D-Torrance) and Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe to assess the benefits and burdens of expanded air traffic in the South Bay.

The group of about 40 members will include politicians and representatives of the South Bay Council of Governments, the South Bay Assn. of Chambers of Commerce, the El Segundo Employers Assn. and the Southern California Assn. of Governments, said John Wallace, a Knabe spokesman.

Wallace said the meetings will probably be public but the date of the first meeting has not been set.

Airport expansion plans backed by Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, airlines and major business interests call for doubling the airport’s passenger capacity by 2020 while tripling its cargo-handling facilities.
