Video Sales to Raise Bookmobile Funds

The Anaheim Public Library Foundation is hoping to stock a second bookmobile for the city by selling copies of a video about Anaheim’s history.

The foundation is working to raise the $100,000 needed to purchase 10,000 volumes for the bookmobile, which is expected to hit the road in 2000, said Jim Hathcock, foundation president.

The $25 video, “Anaheim: From Grapes to Golden Opportunities,” is available at the Central Library, branch libraries and the Anaheim Museum.

The video tells the story of Anaheim from its beginnings as a wine-producing colony to its future as a sports-entertainment center.

So far, 225 videos have been sold, Hathcock said.

The foundation also hopes to raise a $1-million permanent endowment by 2002, the centennial of the library. Income from the endowment would be used to buy books and other reading and research materials.

“If you have that endowment, it guarantees money to buy books,” Hathcock said.

Since 1995, the foundation has raised about $75,000 to support Anaheim’s library system.

The foundation was formed by a group of Anaheim residents and users of the library system who recognized that city funding was insufficient, Hathcock said.

Membership in the foundation is $20 a year; volunteers are needed to serve on the advisory board.
