Blue Jays Rout Mariners, 16-2

Toronto hit a season-high seven home runs, two each by Shawn Green and Carlos Delgado, and Ken Griffey Jr.’s home run slump continued for Seattle in a 16-2 victory by the Blue Jays over the Mariners on Wednesday night.

Jose Cruz Jr., Darrin Fletcher and Felipe Crespo also homered for the Blue Jays, who have the third most homers in the AL with 165. Delgado tied his career high with five RBIs and Green drove in four runs.

The seven home runs allowed by Seattle pitchers was a club record.

Pat Hentgen (11-9) allowed four hits in five innings on a night when the Blue Jays hit four of their homers off Ken Cloude (7-9) in the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead.

Some fans in the Kingdome crowd of 26,258 began leaving in the fourth when the score was 8-0.

Griffey, the AL leader with 42 homers, went 0 for 2 with a walk and now has one homer in his last 73 at-bats.
