Nonprofit Groups Urged to Adopt a Park
There are 24 orphans in Fullerton eagerly awaiting adoption, but they are not children. They’re parks.
The city will pay $325 to local community groups to “adopt” a park. In return, the city asks that the groups keep the parks litter-free for a minimum of 15 weeks.
The groups must visit their assigned parks at least once a week, said Kathy Jelin, Adopt-A-Park program coordinator.
The adopters’ main responsibilities are to pick up paper, cans and other litter. The groups also should be on the lookout for any dangerous objects, broken playground equipment or suspicious activities.
Applicants must be nonprofit, Fullerton-based organizations. At least half of the groups’ members must live in Fullerton. The organizations also must provide a list of local community activities they have either participated in or sponsored.
The next Adopt-A-Park session lasts Sept. 20 to Jan. 16. Applications are now available and must be returned to City Hall by 5 p.m. Thursday.
