An unattended pan left on an active gas burner ignited a small kitchen fire Friday afternoon inside an apartment near downtown Ventura, fire officials said.

Smoke damage to a second-story apartment at 100 E. Center St. was estimated at $5,000, Ventura Fire Chief Mike Maher said.

Firefighters arrived at the home about 1:40 p.m. after several tenants saw smoke, Maher said. When firefighters arrived, they found the door open, an empty pan on the stove and no one home.

The small fire was extinguished in less than five minutes, Maher said. The residents, a woman and two men, were not displaced.
