The suspected driver of a vehicle that drifted off the road and crashed into a drainage culvert in the Angeles National Forest, killing three passengers, was apprehended Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The alleged driver, suspected of driving under the influence, fled the scene of the Saturday night accident and was apprehended Sunday, said CHP Officer Karen Faciane. A passing motorist spotted the wreckage early Sunday at Little Tujunga Road and Marek Canyon and called authorities at 6:24 a.m.

When Los Angeles County fire rescuers arrived, it was clear that the accident occurred hours earlier. Law enforcement officials believe the crash happened about 11 p.m. Saturday. Two women and one man were found dead in the car. Their identities were not released.
