UC Appointments
Re “Panel Rejects Governor’s UC Nominees,” Aug. 20: Last time I looked, didn’t we elect Gov. Pete Wilson for a four-year term? Senate President Pro Tem John Burton’s (D-San Francisco) scuttling of Wilson’s nominations for the University of California’s Board of Regents based solely on political reasons makes no sense.
Burton was quoted as saying the next governor (who he, no doubt, hopes is Democratic Lt. Gov. Gray Davis) should make the appointments. But didn’t the vacancies come during Wilson’s term? In that case, Wilson should fill the vacancies.
If a vacancy shows up on the U.S. Supreme Court, should the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate reject all Clinton appointees based on the logic that it should be the next president who should make the appointment? Whether the governor has four years left in office or four months, the sitting governor should be able to act as governor until his successor takes the oath of office.
