City Accepts $225,000 Grant for Clean-Fuel Shuttle System

A plan to use high-tech shuttles to whisk tourists around the resort area recently moved a step forward when the City Council approved an agreement with the California Energy Commission to develop the system.

The city accepted $225,000 from the commission to develop the shuttle system, proposed to operate on natural gas. Some of the shuttles will run on electricity or other advanced fuel technologies.

The system will be designed to take guests from their hotels and motels to spots surrounding Disneyland. The $12-million system of about 35 shuttles will be financed with federal, state, regional and local grant money. Ongoing operations would be supported through passenger fares and financial contributions from resort-area businesses.

Officials said they hope to have the shuttles in full operation by June 2001 to coincide with the opening of Disney’s California Adventure, the Anaheim Convention Center expansion and other nearby improvements.
