Presidents’ Shoes to Go on Display
Hoping to put the nation’s best feet forward, a traveling exhibit of presidential shoes is expected to arrive next month at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum near Simi Valley.
The exhibit, which will run Sept. 12 to Nov. 29, will feature footwear once worn by presidents such as Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Harry S. Truman and Ronald Reagan.
The shoes reflect different time periods and the leaders’ sense of style. For example, President Carter favored black wingtips, while President Ford sported chukka boots.
The exhibit will also feature photos and trivia from the records of Johnston & Murphy, a company that has been crafting presidential footwear for nearly 150 years.
The Reagan library is at 40 Presidential Drive and is open Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (800) 410-8354.
Currently, the library is displaying an exhibit titled “Within the Vault,” which features a collection of gifts received by Ronald and Nancy Reagan. The gifts range from a portrait of the president made of jelly beans to his and her white satin jackets from Frank Sinatra to a bronze sculpture made by Anthony Quinn.
The gift exhibit will run through Oct. 25.
