The city’s efforts were recognized at the first Trash Cutter Awards presented in Sacramento by the Integrated Waste Management Board--the state’s primary recycling agency.

“On a statewide level, we’ve been able to keep 100 million tons of garbage out of landfills because of efforts like these,” said board spokesman Eric Lamoureux.

Carson won the the award for “Most Creative Partnerships” for a program it developed in conjunction with UCLA, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Fullerton, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Waste Board.

During 1997 and 1998, college interns conducted inspections of waste disposal and recycling programs at 120 Carson businesses.
