Seminary President Will Lecture

* Fuller Seminary President Richard Mouw will present a lecture at Ventura’s Community Presbyterian Church on Oct. 4 entitled “Christian Faithfulness in a Culture of Confusion.”

A philosopher, scholar and author, Mouw serves as the president of the largest seminary in North America, said Paul Dugan, minister of Community Presbyterian’s congregational life. The free lecture begins at 6 p.m. Child care will be provided with three days’ advance notice.

Mouw will also present that day’s two worship services, at 8:45 and 10:30 a.m.

He is the author of two books, “Uncommon Decency” and “Consulting the Faithful.”

Academy Opens Fall Registration

* The Conejo Jewish Academy in Agoura Hills has opened registration for its Hebrew School program this fall.

The academy provides Jewish education by a staff of rabbis and instructors.

The academy offers an afternoon school to provide an environment for children to receive a broad knowledge of Judaism in a stimulating venue, said Rabbi Yitzchak Sapochkinsky.

The academy is open to Jews from all backgrounds and affiliations. There are no membership fees. Bat and bar mitzvah training is included.

Singer-Guitarist to Perform

* Andrea Massion, singer and guitarist, will present Hebrew and English songs at Congregation Am HaYam in Oxnard during Salichot Sept. 12, beginning at 10 p.m. A midnight service will follow.

Beginning with Erev Rosh Hashanah Sunday, on Sept. 20, numerous other services will be held in September, including Yom Kippur on Sept. 30.

School Applications Accepted

* Applications for kindergarten and preschool are being accepted at Congregation B’nai Emet in Simi Valley.

Instruction in Japanese Language

* The Oxnard Buddhist Church will offer instruction in reading, writing and speaking Japanese beginning Sept. 12.

The Japanese Language School will provide instruction to kindergartners through adults. The classes will run from from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Adventist Media Center Expanding

* The North American headquarters of the Adventist Media Center in Simi Valley is enlarging its office space by 70%, to 65,000 square feet, said Vice President Marshall Chase.

North American Adventist President Alfred C. McClure took part in groundbreaking ceremonies earlier this month.

The Cochran Street media center’s new radio studios, video editing rooms and office space are expected to be completed in 1999.

“We currently produce all Adventist radio and TV programs for North America,” Chase said.

“Voice of Prophecy” and “Voz de la Esperanza” in Spanish are heard on radio stations in 23 countries. The TV show “It Is Written” is also produced in the Simi Valley media center and seen in 80 countries.

“Voice of Prophecy” and the Adventist TV show “Faith for Today” are two of the oldest religious broadcasts in the country, Chase added.

Both shows have been on the air for nearly 50 years, he said.

Coping With Hearing Loss

* Ventura County’s Jewish Family Service and the Camarillo Health Care District will sponsor a counseling program for people with hearing loss beginning in September in Ventura and Camarillo.

Counseling will be available at the Camarillo Health Care office at 3639 E. Las Posas Road No. 117, and at Jewish Family Service, 1915 E. Main St. in Ventura.

Laine Waggoner of Camarillo, who has used a hearing aid for 40 years, is the volunteer counselor.

“Since few people understand the amount of patience and persistence required to adjust to hearing aid use, millions of hearing aids sit unused in drawers,” said Jewish Family Service Executive Director Susan Hardy. Its counseling fees are based on income and begin at $15 per hour, she said.

* South Coast Fellowship and Gospel Light Publications in Ventura will co-sponsor a “Women of Destiny” seminar with author and speaker Cindy Jacobs on Sept. 4 at South Coast Fellowship in Ventura.

High Holiday Services Set at Hyatt

* Chabad of the Conejo invites Jews of all backgrounds to its High Holiday services at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza Hotel in Westlake Village, beginning with Rosh Hashanah services on Sept. 20, to usher in the Jewish New Year.

Special arrangements have been made to accommodate those interested in spending the holidays at the hotel, including kosher catered meals, said Rabbi Moshe Bryski of Chabad of the Conejo.

‘Journey Program’ Is for All Ages

* A free 10-week “Journey Program” for children, youth and adults will begin Sept. 16 and run from 6 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday at Camarillo’s United Methodist Church. Child care will be provided.

“Journey Singers” will learn music and movement with Lynn Decker-Mahin and choreographer Nema Pierce from 6 to 6:30 p.m., for children in kindergarten through third grade.

“Journey with the Friendly Beasts,” for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, “will prepare a stable for the birth of the baby Jesus” while sharing songs, games and fun from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“Club Journey,” for junior and senior high school youth, will have football, table tennis, pool, computer games and snacks each Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Junior and senior high school girls are invited to join Pierce in creating movements that interpret music. No previous dance experience is required. Interpretive dancers will meet in the sanctuary from 7 to 8 p.m.

The fall “Journey Class for Adults” will look at the spirit, attitude and mind of Christ, said Jim Decker-Mahin of the church.

Line-dancing classes will also be taught Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Speaker Set for CLU Founders Day

* The Rev. Rudolph Featherstone, professor of cross-cultural theological studies at Trinity Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, will speak at Cal Lutheran University’s 38th annual Founders Day Convocation on Oct. 23. His topic will focus on CLU as a character-building community.

Founders Day also serves as the annual meeting of CLU supporters who represent the church, faculty, students and community.

Jewish School Accredited

* Thousand Oaks’ Temple Etz Chaim Religious School has become the first religious school in the Conejo Valley to be accredited by the Bureau of Jewish Education, temple members said.

Joyce Bronstein, the school’s director of religious education, and Joel Shrater, the temple’s president, accepted the certificate of accreditation recently at a luncheon in Los Angeles.

“The school is dedicated to providing a positive and nurturing Jewish education for students in grades K through 10,” said Linda Friedlander of the temple.

Card Sales to Benefit Interface

* For the 15th year, Interface Children Family Services is offering holiday greeting cards for sale, with the profits helping to provide shelter and counseling to battered women and their children, abused and abandoned children and youth, and families and individuals in crisis throughout Ventura County.

“Last year, Interface touched the lives of more than 195,000 Ventura County residents by providing education, prevention, intervention and shelter services,” said board member Anita Havekost, who is heading the holiday card committee.

* Thousand Oaks’ Temple Etz Chaim will hold open houses at 11 a.m. Sunday and Sept. 13. Prospective members are invited for a tour of the temple and the opportunity to meet with the rabbi.

Barbecues Serve as Outreach

* St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church of Thousand Oaks is holing a summer outreach dinner and fund-raiser called “Friday Family Gourmet Barbecue” on several Friday evenings on the church grounds. Everyone is welcome.

The barbecue offers a variety of entrees and side dishes, available to take out or to eat on the premises. The barbecue will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. through Sept. 11.

Steaks, fish and chicken dinners, hot dogs and beverages will be on the menu.

The barbecue team works in tandem with the charitable group People to People, which has served thousands of meals to local needy and homeless people.
