Wounded Knee Hampers Cookson

Share

Although he is batting .357 at triple-A Tucson, Brent Cookson (Santa Paula, Ventura College) hasn’t been called up to the Arizona Diamondbacks because he’s been troubled by an injured knee most of the season.

He was on the disabled list in May and June, and re-injured the knee a few weeks ago. Only now is he at full strength.

An ankle injury derailed his first taste of the big leagues three years ago. He was called up to the Kansas City Royals after batting .340 in triple-A, doubled in his first game, then sprained an ankle rounding third and had to sit for six weeks.

Cookson could get another chance when major league rosters expand Sept. 1. Arizona outfielders Brent Brede, Karim Garcia and Yamil Benitez are all having mediocre seasons.

JETHAWKS

Jason Regan hit a solo home run and a two-run double in Lancaster’s 9-6 victory over High Desert Friday night at High Desert.

Jayson Bass hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give the JetHawks a 7-6 lead.

SUNS

Manny Gagliano hit a grand slam and Mission Viejo scored nine runs in the first two innings of a 9-1 victory over Pacific at Oxnard College.

Bernie Nunez hit a run-scoring single and leads the Suns with 41 runs batted in.
